World poverty and the World Bank

The World Bank recently published its ten-yearly World Development Report on poverty. This report will be highly influential on development thinking and programmes. It is the Bank’s flagship publication, with over 150,000 copies printed and a large number distributed for free across the world. It will guide official thinking on the issue of poverty for many years.

We facilitated the global online discussion of the initial draft, the comments from which were then fed back to the authors before the report’s finalisation. The consultation ran for two months in early 2000 and 1,500 people participated from over 100 countries.

Together with the Overseas Development Institute, we have also written a briefing paper entitled New thinking on poverty in the UK:  Any lessons for the South?
