Mapping need among young people
This project was undertaken on behalf of the Prince’s Trust and focused on the needs of young people in England and Wales between the ages of 12 and 25. The exercise was designed to provide an impression of the geographic variation of need among young people on five different measures including population, income and work, education, care and crime. The emphasis was on data being as localised as possible.
A number of individual data series were combined to create indices for each of the five themes. For example, the population index is calculated from data about the percentage of 16 to 24 year-olds not in education or work, the percentage of the population aged 12 and over and under 25, and the percentage of the population from an ethnic minority.
The results of the analysis are mainly presented in a series of maps for each of the nine English regions plus Wales. The maps are drawn at different levels, depending on the smallest geographical unit for which data was available and a composite index could be constructed.
The maps are supported by tables which show how individual local authorities are ranked on each of the individual series that go to make up the indices. In addition, detailed information is presented at ward level for levels of dependency on the main means tested benefits.
